Standards open and limit markets. Mastering the rules of technology – defined by EN/DIN standards – is a central quality component in the value-adding process of construction. Within the framework of its various initiatives in politics and through active participation and co-design in the committees of DIN, the construction industry is committed to counteracting the trend towards construction standardisation that is distancing itself from the needs of the users. Last but not least, standards are also an essential instrument for meeting the current challenges of the building industry. In 2016, the DIN Special Presidential Committee on Construction and Buildings (PBG) was formed on the initiative of the construction industry under the leadership of DIN President Dr. Albert Dürr and with the active participation of Dipl.-Ing. Klaus Pöllath, Vice-President Technology of the German Construction Industry Association, with the aim of coordinating and managing standardisation work and standardisation projects across all committees that cover the design and construction of buildings and urban spaces. In an intensive process, a basic document, the “German Standardisation Roadmap for Buildings”, was developed in cooperation with the circles involved in construction and the NABau Advisory Council (Chairman Dipl.-Ing. Roland Jörger), which was then adopted by the DIN Executive Committee in November 2017. Presidium was decided
The roadmap contains important recommendations for action on how to further improve the acceptance of standards in planning, construction and operation, and proposes concepts on how standardisation can make structures safer and construction more economical. In future, the relevance of standards in the construction sector is to be assessed in a more structured manner at national and European level, in order to enable an overall set of standards that does not allow contradictions and inconsistencies between the areas of dimensioning, planning, execution and construction products.
